[ Profile ]
Remus Lupin was a part of the infamous Marauders that went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and was close friends with the other members, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. He was the 'well behaved' member of the group, and often tried to stop James and Sirius from getting into trouble. He returned to Hogwarts when he was older, to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts for a year. Unfortunately once the parents of the students realised he was a werewolf, a lot of them petitioned for him to be removed.
[ Physical Appearance ]
Remus is of an average height, and appears thin and gaunt for the majority of the time, due to the side effects his lycanthropy. He's pale and almost sickly looking at certain times of the month. His hair is a light brown colour, streaked with premature grey, and he has amber, almost wolf like eyes.
His casual clothing is just that, casual slacks and shirts, though they tend to be a little shabby here and there, given that he hadn't got a lot of money for such things. Whilst teaching, he wears his clothes a little more well kept, and on occasion wears his wizard robes.
[ Personality ]
Quiet and intelligent, Remus is often underestimated, given his polite nature, though he has an underlying mischievous streak from his days as a Marauder. Mild mannered and perceptive, Remus' manner of teaching is by using kindness and humour to build confidence in his students. It stems back from when he first attended school, as due to his condition, he was wary of making friends.
He not only sees the best in everyone, but also tries to help them bring it out, and has the uncanny ability to see which people need guidance. One of Remus' vices is that he gives the friends that he has a lot of slack, he's so used to being disliked for what he is, he's just pleased to have people that like him. Sirius falls under this category for certain, and to some extent, so do Remus' students
[ History ]
As a young boy, Lupin was bitten by the feared werewolf Fenrir Greyback, due his father offending him. His parents tried everything they could to help him, but there was no cure for his lycanthropy, leading them to think that he would not be able to attend Hogwarts because other parents would not want their children around a werewolf. Fortunately for them, however, Dumbledore became headmaster of Hogwarts, and together they devised a way for Lupin to attend school in spite of his condition. Because of this, the infamous Whomping Willow was planted in the grounds, covering a tunnel that led into a long abandoned shack in the village of Hogsmede. The tree was designed to hit anyone who dared approach it, the trick to it was to prod a knot on it's trunk to still the flailing branches. Using this method, Remus could sneak down into the shack, and undergo his monthly transformation there. When he was younger, no such potions were available to him to ease his condition, so his transformations were always painful, causing him to scream. The villagers of Hogsmede heard the sounds coming from the seemingly empty shack, and so the rumours of the haunted Shrieking Shack were started. Dumbledore fuelled the rumours, as to keep people away.
Due to his condition, Remus had no friends before attending Hogwarts, but he soon became close friends with three of the boys in his house; James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. He kept what he was from them, making up excuses for his monthly absences, not wanting to lose the only friends he had ever had. However, despite his best efforts, they eventually found out, but were far from abandoning him. Quite the opposite, the three studied hard to become illegal Animagi, so they could be there for Remus during his transformations. They achieved this in their fifth year, James and Sirius taking on larger animals to keep Remus under control, and Peter taking the form of a rat, to prod the knot to the Whomping Willow. Thanks to his friends, Remus was able to keep a little more of his human mind during that night of the month, and the four roamed about the grounds together.
After graduating from Hogwarts, Remus remained good friends with Sirius, James and Peter. Together they ended up joining the Order of the Phoenix, in the fight against the cruel wizard, Lord Voldemort. When James married his school sweetheart Lily, Sirius was named as their 'secret keeper', meaning that he was the only one who knew of their actual whereabouts. Both Potters were a known enemy of Voldemort, and when they had a son to protect as well, they wanted to keep themselves hidden from him. Unknown to Remus, Sirius suggested that Peter be their secret keeper instead, assuming the boy who just tagged along after the three of them couldn't possibly be on Voldemort's side. Unfortunately he was wrong, Peter betrayed the Potters, and they were killed. As no-one else knew that he had convinced them to change their secret keeper to Peter, everyone assumed that it was Sirius who had betrayed them. Grieved at the loss of his dear friends, Sirius approached Peter, only for his once friend to fake his own death, killing a street of muggles in the process. Sirius was charged for this murder, and sent to Azkaban, a prison for wizards. Remus, devastated at the loss of all three of his best friends, went mostly unheard of for many years, struggling to find work due to his condition.
Years later, he was accepted back into Hogwarts, and took up the position of Defence Against the Dark Arts. Now able to take a potion that allowed him to keep his human mind during his monthly transformations, Remus didn't have to return to the Shrieking Shack, able to curl up in his office as a harmless wolf. He strived to keep his secret from the students, though thanks to a bitter Professor Snape, a boy who had been picked on during their time together in school, by James and Sirius, no less, several anvil sized hints were dropped. Only Hermione Granger picked up on this, and she kept it a secret, seeing Remus as a good man, despite what he was.
The same year, Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban. Remus still had little idea of his friend's intentions, and genuinely believed that he might be out to kill Harry Potter. Throughout the school year, Remus struggled with his guilt and loyalty in regards to his old friend. Sirius broke into Hogwarts several times that year, despite Dementors surrounding the grounds. Remus knew Black was an Animagus who might be using his animal form to sneak into the castle, but he chose not to pass this information on to the Headmaster. He confiscated the Marauders Map from Harry Potter, an enchanted piece of parchment that shows the location of everyone in Hogwarts and its grounds, in order to keep a closer eye on Sirius. In early June Remus saw something he found quite odd on the map: Sirius Black pulling Ron Weasley and Peter Pettigrew under the Whomping Willow. Though confused, the pieces were rapidly starting to fall into place, and Remus followed the others into the tunnel and to the Shrieking Shack.
With the truth having dawned on him, an emotional reunion with Sirius followed , and the two of them explained themselves by telling Harry, Ron and Hermione the story of their time at Hogwarts and after. After living as Scabbers, the Weasley family's pet rat, for some thirteen years, the truth about Wormtail was finally out. After forcing Peter to revert to his human form, Remus and Sirius intended to kill him for his betrayal of Lily and James. In the end they honoured Harry's wishes that Peter not be killed, but given to the Dementors instead .
Unfortunately, given the surprise of seeing Peter Pettigrew's name on the map, Remus forgot to take the potion that kept his mind at ease during a werewolf transformation, and it was ill luck that a full moon was due that night. In the confusion of him transforming, and Sirius switching to his Animagus form to protect the students, Peter was able to transform into a rat, and scurry away into the darkness. Thus, they lost the one piece of evidence that could save Sirius from Azkaban again. The following morning, Professor Snape 'accidentally on purpose' told the student body of just what Remus was, and deciding that parents wouldn't want their children being taught by a werewolf, Remus resigned, and went back to aiding the Order of the Phoenix. Despite what he was, Remus was easily the most popular Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher amongst the students lucky enough to have him teach them.
After Sirius was lost to them, thanks to Bellatrix Lestrange, Remus discovered just where his friend had ended up to. As he could no longer find work in a place where his name and lineage was well known, he applied for a teaching position at the same academy as Sirius worked at, and was accepted, given that he very much had a way of controlling his werewolf side.
[ Pets ]
Sirius none as of yet.
[ Other ? ]
Despite his frail appearance, Remus is a powerful wizard, and is one of the few that has mastered wandless magic. His speciality seems to be Defence against the Dark Arts, hence his reason for taking the Light Elemental classes. Though he's a werewolf, Remus has his problem very much under control, and is vigilant in marking the night of a full moon every month, and taking his potion in order to keep his human mind.
